TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) – Tybee Island celebrated St. Patrick’s Day early on Saturday with their annual parade.
The city expects the island to stay busy over the next week as people come into town for Savannah’s celebration.
City Manager Shawn Gillen says Tybee’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration is always the busiest weekend they have in March and this year that stood true.
Even with the cold and windy weather, Gillen says about 7,500 cars came onto the island Saturday. He says even though their celebration is over, he expects another wave of people to come to Tybee starting tomorrow.
He says this is because a lot of people are staying in the island’s hotels and STVR’s and then driving into Savannah for the day Thursday.
He says usually by Thursday night people will come back and spend the rest of their weekend at the beach.
“We do see an uptick in normal March traffic that day of the parade, but usually after the parade. It’s like 3-5 in the afternoon people start to trickle from the parade and come on out,” Gillen said.
Gillen says the crowd they saw over the weekend is a good indication that it’s going to be a busy season for the island.
