The news media has reported that the pre-game fly over of jets at the 2023 Super Bowl in 2023 was performed by four female pilots.
While that may be big news to some it is a little late in mentioning the contributions to aviation by members of the lady gender.
Even before Amelia Earhart received her world wide recognition for her misfortunate, ill-failed trip in the Atlantic Ocean women have been involved in flying both locally, nationally and throughout the world.
In World War II, “Rosie the Riveter” built the thousands of fighters and bombers necessary to defeat Germany and Japan.
There existed a ban on ladies being engaged in aerial combat, but they served honorably as courier pilots transporting the new aircraft from the sites of the manufacturers to the various locations where they could be used to fight the enemies of America.
Since the non-combat restriction was removed many ladies have honorably flown and (died) in the service of our country.
The Super Bowl presentation in 2023 is just the latest recognition of lady pilots’ contributions to the defense of America.
(March 8 should also be recognized and acknowledged as International Women’s Day!)
