Letter: Ukraine is standing up for American ideals of freedom. But we are not. – Savannah Morning News

Mayor Andre Sayegh raises the Ukrainian flag in front of Paterson City Hall on Monday, Feb. 28, 2022.

As I sit here watching the genuine hero in Volodymyr Zelenskyy, I realize it is a ULM (Ukrainian Lives Matter) moment. The Charleston City Hall is flying a Ukrainian flag from its rooftop. Their action reminds me of the East Germans flying flags on top of the Berlin Wall.

Ukraine is standing up for American ideals of freedom and democracy. But we are not. Sanctions are like appeasement in 1938. They don’t stop a dictator intent on war. Only force does. Six years after 1938’s appeasement my uncle died in Normandy. Will my grandson die in the future because we did not stop this invasion today?
